Many bacteria have evolved the ability to make intricate and bioactive small molecules in order to suppress the growth of their competitors, which oftentimes have potential as antibiotic or anticancer drugs. However, the vast majority of bacteria are recalcitrant to laboratory culture. We are interested in using synthetic biology approaches to express small molecules, using pathways from uncultured bacteria that we have sequenced through metagenomics (culture-independent sequencing).
